You just finished high school or 6th form and you are like now what?!

Your parents are insisting that you must pay rent now kiddo and you have to buy your own shit,

Eeeeek what to do?!!

Some of you might be going to university but the loan is not enough to live on, and the bank of mum and dad is closing down.

You have no experience so who the hell is going to employ you?!

Well never fear, there are jobs out there literally screaming for your youth, vigor, your energy and your inquisitive mind AND you can pick up some awesome transferable skills on the way.

Here are four jobs you can try working full-time or part time to fit around your further studies earning while you are learning and starting to build that magical CV.

McDonalds

Probably only been to Maccy D’s for some chicken and Chips on a late night out but they often have vacancies for full timers and students alike.

Its shift work so you can fit shifts around your life, a uniform is provided just make sure you wash it regularly after shift as believe me it won’t pass the sniff test the next day!

It’s actually quite fun to work there, I did a stint aged 16-17 yrs, not only did I learn how to flip burgers and fry chicken, but McDonalds has a training route for all their staff and you have to pass little exams to get your stars on your badge.

You will also get to work with a cool bunch of international people all slaving away with you making their way in the world just like you!

Major Skills learnt:

  • Food Hygiene
  • Efficiency
  • Customer service
  • Teamwork

Retail

No young person’s life is complete without working in some kind of store at some point. Whether that’s Argos, River Island or JD sports, here you will be at the fore-front of customer service and meet all kinds of people,

Some will be nice, some bloody awful, inpatient and frustrating, the general public on a day out shopping is always full of surprises.

As a minion in a retail outlet, you will be at your store manager’s beck and call, stacking shelves or hanging things up as well as serving customers at a computerized till.

Major Skills learnt

  • Conversational Skills
  • Managing a store florr
  • Stocking up and inventory
  • Taking cash and card payments

Bar Work

By far the most fund of all the jobs listed in this post, if a little hard work is working behind a bar.

It’s not for everyone but I seriously recommend Bar work as long as you can handle a late night or two.

Most bars also service food now so you may go from bar to floor waitering at the drop of a hat.

Bar work will also keep you fit as you are standing and moving as well as lifting things for the entirety of your shift.

You will be working with people from different cultures and serving people from all walks of life which is an education in itself!

Fellow members of staff will become like family, and you will spend many an after work happy hour with them.

Major Skills learnt

  • Psychological reading people skills
  • Drinks mixing and stock taking
  • People and conversational skills
  • Online customer service

Customer Service

This may be your first step into an office environment working with others but with your own PC and Inbox to manage.

You may also have to use the telephone and speak to many different people about the product or service that your company offers.

Working in customer service ensures that you get a complete overview of how a company operates from the CEO to the marketing and sales team.

You will have to lliase with every department, report to a manager and deal with everything from orders to complaints and deal with them quickly and efficiently.

Major Skills learnt

  • How to priorotise and manage one or more email inboxes
  • Telephone and possible sales skills
  • How to handle complaints and difficult people

So you see, many transferable skills to take with you into a future career!
